“This is the gospel of Rolfing: when the body is working properly, the force of gravity can flow through it. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.”  — Dr. Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D.

Originally developed by Ida P. Rolf, Ph.D., Rolfing is a system of connective tissue manipulation and somatic education focused on structural alignment, effortless movement, and adaptability. The genius of Rolfing rests on Dr. Rolf’s insight that the human body is more at ease and functions most effectively when its structure is balanced in gravity by the alignment of the body's major segments on a vertical line.  Like a Roman arch, a well-aligned body actually works with the forces of gravity to remain effortlessly upright.

She observed that over time, the field of gravity accentuates the body’s habitual imbalances and diminishes its overall function.
Based on these observations Dr. Rolf developed her original method of hands-on manipulation of the body’s connective tissue, the fascia, to reduce gravity’s adverse effects on the body.  Fascia is so plastic that the body’s alignment can be brought into harmony with gravity at practically any time of life.  A Rolfer analyzes the body’s patterns, and through refined and intelligent pressure releases and lengthens the fascia, freeing the body and allowing it to better orient itself in relation to gravity.  Rolfing can resolve pain and unease from many different causes, including those related to the lingering effects of accidents, illness, trauma, repetitive motion injuries, aging and stress.
